Kensley Simmons, Alabama State University, Soccer

In a reflection on the intersection of soccer and HBCU pride, Kensley Simmons, a junior at Alabama State University, shares her journey as a student-athlete. For Kensley, representing an HBCU holds deep meaning:

“Being able to represent an HBCU, especially one my grandparents graduated from, is something that’s very important and special to me.”

From the age of three, soccer became Kensley’s outlet, a passion that allowed her to be herself and find freedom: “It just makes me feel free, very happy as well. Like I have no worries when I’m playing soccer.” Her gratitude for the sport shines through as she reflects on its impact on her life and identity.

What sets Alabama State’s soccer program apart, according to Kensley, is its diversity. The team boasts players from across the U.S. and around the globe, including Tasmania, Australia, and Iceland. “Everybody brings something different to the table,” Kensley explains, emphasizing the unique blend of experiences and creativity the players contribute.

Kensley’s story is a testament to the power of HBCU culture and the global connections forged through soccer. It’s a celebration of heritage, diversity, and the special space HBCUs create for athletes to thrive.
